Course objectives
This course outlines a range of communication theories, models and methods with special emphasis on problems of communication and mass media communication. In the first part course provides a clear introduction to the most important results of contemporary research into communication together with the theories that seek to explain it. The course comes especially from the structuralist, sociological and linguistic perspectives (de Saussure, Barthes, Fiske, Hartley, Hall, Hurwitz, Levi-Strauuss). By the end of the course students will understand basic principles of semiotic analysis of media content too. Second part of course is focused on media impacts, media influence and media effects. Lectures try to explain key topics in perception of media contents, efficiency of media persuasion, models of information distribution, role of media in political communication. At the end of the course students should be able to:understand and explain basic mechanisms of media impact, influence and effects. Course is structured into twelve lectures.
