- Course objectives
- The course is an introduction to environmental sociology. It explores basic terminology, approaches, theories and authores. The aim of course is to foster a critical thinking and an ability to analyze contemporary environmental discussions.
- Learning outcomes
- After completing the course students are able to: recognize the development of the environmental sociology as the discipline in a historical context; to be familiar with basic theoretical concepts and notions of environmental sociology; through this knowledge they can interpret the relationships between man, society, environment and nature; the course will also allow to students to get rid of a certain "sociological naivety" and critically approach for granted things; the knowledge form the course will allow students to enter into public debates on environmental issues and issues.
- Syllabus
- Structure of course Environmental sociology:
- 1) Sociology, as if nature (not) mattered. Beginnings and development of environmental sociology, historical context.
- 2) Nature? What is it? Social concepts of nature.
- 3) Individualization – society in which everyone i salone. Characteristics of contemporary society.
- 4) Society of treadmill of production. Characteristics of contemporary society.
- 5) I consume, therefore I am. Consumption and its role in contemporary society.
- 6) Social construction of environmental problems or whatis reality.
- 7) Science gives us valuable data. Science and its role in the identifying environmental issues in modern society.
- 8) Risks. Sociology of risk.
- 9) Environmental movement as important actors.
