- Course objectives
- Main objective of the course can be summarized as follows: comparison of the position of the heads of state in European countries; identifications of the differences between personalities of the head of state and their influence on the role played by this institution in the political system; understanding of the head of state position according to the theories of political system; analysis of the differences between formal and real position of the heads of the states; evaluation of factors which influence these differences.
- Learning outcomes
- Students should be able to compare position of the heads of state in different European countries, identify the reasons of different institutional power of the heads of state. They should be able to understand position of the head of state according to the theories of political systém, moreover they should be able to analyze differences between formal and real position and evaluate which factors influenced these differences.

- 1. Heads of states in the history of Europe 2. Traditional European monarchies at their end 3. Heads of states as threat to democracy 4. Evaluation of the position of the head of state 5. Contemporary European monarchies 6. Presidents under semi-presidential and parliamentary systems 7. Strong Presidents in Western Europe 8. Weak Presidents in Western Europe 9. Central European Presidents 10. Presidents in the South-Eastern Europe 11. - Teaching methods
- The course is mostly conducted through lectures. Students also write an essay about the head of state in the selected European country.
- Assessment methods
- Students write a short seminar paper (maximum 5 points), they make a short presentation (maximum 10 points) and they can get points for discussion during seminars (maximum 5 points) and at the end of the semester write an final written exam (maximum 20 points). It is necessary to get at least 24 points.
