- Course objectives
- The subject is characterized by three goals. First, basic information about a crisis and effective coping strategies useful in crisis intervention will be clarified. Second, the basic skills and techniques of crisis intervention will be practically exercised (e.g. contracting the client, mapping the client´s issues and problems, work with emotional regulation and the ending of the intervention).
- Learning outcomes
- After the course, a student will be able to begin the interview, identify the contract, and to end the interview as recommended. The student will be able to recognize the crisis, suit the intervention to a particular client, and apply the basic techniques of the crisis intervention. Moreover, the student will learn, how to deal with different types of client´s emotions.
- Syllabus
- 1. Block: What is the crisis? The basic principles of the work with a crisis. The techniques of intervention (the beginning, work on contract, the ending of the intervention). 2. Working with the client´s emotions in crisis intervention (anger, anxiety, sadness, sorrow, fear, shame). The important chapters from the crisis intervention (work with silence, work with a suicidal client, home violence, addictions). 3. Crisis intervention with children, adults, and seniors. Crisis intervention - the phone, chat, and face-to-face contact. The ethics in crisis intervention. Self-care for workers in crisis intervention.

- Teaching methods
- The lessons will take place only 3 times during the whole semester, irregularly. There will be altogether 6 days of lessons, group discussions, and practical sessions. The lessons will be focused on learning particular techniques from crisis intervention and practicing giving legitimate feedback.
- Assessment methods
- To pass the course, the student needs to attend a colloquium at the end of the semester. To attend this colloquium the student has to be present at least 80% of all learning hours (during the 6 days) and write a final essay (report about an interview) together with providing feedback to two of his classmates and self-reflection.
