- Course objectives
- This course will provide PhD students in Clinical Psychology with an opportunity to focus on public health issues, typical methodologies used in the field of public health, and to familiarize themselves with areas of public health research that are relevant from the both a clinical perspective as well as prevention. Students will engage in independent study based on recommended literature and will be expacted to expand the sources with additional literatuure related to their specific areas of research. Consultations will focus on critically evaluating scientific studies so that students develop their independent critical scientific thinking and develop their ability to engage in scientific discussions not only on purely psychological issues but also in terms of public health.
- Learning outcomes
- After finishing the course students will: - be able to describe the research methods used in the field of health psychology, public health and to enumerate their limitations. - be able to explain basic psychological principles in human behavior and motivation - be able to characterize relationships between behavior and health - know the terminology of the main psychological terms in English. - will have knowledge of current research methods and topics in health psychology research Upon completion of the course students will be able to: - search for and understand professional primary sources published in the English language and focusing on health psychology, public health, and clinical psychology - integrate methodological approaches and knowledge from the fields of clinical and health psychology and public health to solve research problems related to human behavior and its impact on health, well-being and quality of life. - engage in a scientific discussion on psychological issues in relation to health - popularize the latest knowledge in health psychology and present it among professional and lay public circles (both in Czech and English)

- Course contents: Week 1: Differenting between the Clinical Psychology, Health Psychology and Public Health fields - objectives, targets, and methods of the fields Week 2-3: Social ecological framework and multiple influence on health, health disparities, contrasting individual and systems approaches to health promotion Week 4-6: Individual and interpersonal factors affecting health Week 5-7: Motivated Behavior and Change in Behavior; intervention approaches Week 8-10: Innovative trends and application of technology in research on health pychology outcomes and in public health approaches Week 11-13: Integration of topics in relation to a specific research topic of the student, work on seminar paper
