Prerequisites
The course is aimed at foreign undergraduate students wishing to acquire basic knowledge and skills in Spanish through English.

Course objectives
The objective of the course is to build the knowledge of Spanish at the A1-A2 level of Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). At the end of the course, the student will be able to understand phrases and the highest frequency vocabulary related to areas of most immediate personal relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, local area, employment, time and places). They will also be able to read very short, simple texts, find specific, predictable information in simple everyday material. Also, the student will be able to communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar topics and activities, to describe in simple terms the family and other people, living conditions, educational background and present or most recent job. Last but not least, they will be able to write short, simple notes and messages relating to matters in areas of immediate needs, as well as a very simple personal letter.

The student will be able to: - introduce herself/himself and others; - ask/provide personal information; - count; - communicate in class; - meet other people and say goodbye; - talk about her/his preferences; - use time expressions; - talk about her/his town; - characterise a person; - talk about her/his daily habits;
Syllabus
  • Pronunciation, greetings. Verb "ser". Negation, question, gender, article. Numerals 0-10, pronouns, verbs ending -ar. Verbs ending -er, -ir, plural. Irregular verbs hacer, tener. Cases, prepositions, "ser". Numerals 11-100. Adjectives, possessive pronouns. ESTAR, HAY, difference ser vs. estar. Questions. Time, place. Reflexive verbs.

Teaching methods
Class discussions, presentations, homework, reading, dictations, grammar and vocabulary exercises. Individual, pair, group activities.
Assessment methods
Regular attendance (70%) and participation in the course. The student also has to complete a final written tasks and recordings.
