Course objectives
A social worker in the prison system helps to resocialise prisoners, their successful return to freedom and their reintegration into society. The course builds on the previous fundamental acquaintance with the theoretical foundations of modern criminology, penology and social work with offenders and focuses on the axioms and paradigms of prison science and practical orientation in the prison environment, the problems of prison systems, the applied principles of the European Prison Rules, and the field performance of the domestic prison and mediation service. It offers insight into the validity of treatment programmes and presents concrete activities of social workers with convicted persons in prisons and outside them. In two blocks, students will meet with prisoners and wardens, social workers, psychologists and other professional prison staff.
Learning outcomes
* knowledge of theoretical concepts in the field of social work
* ability to think and apply theoretical concepts to problem solving in field work with prisoners
