Course objectives
The course provides both theoretical introduction to the main aspects of creating a professional text and the development of practical skills such as attentive and critical reading of professional texts, reflection on writing their own professional texts as well as foreign ones and writing itself. The course participants will learn through information, tasks and practical exercises on topics such as professional style and its genres, citation, publishing ethics and plagiarism issues, work with resources, professional text composition, professional style language and presentation skills. The focus of the course will be on attentive, informed reading of texts, practicing and improving argumentation, and developing own writing, all accompanied by feedback from colleagues and lecturers. Students will use the acquired knowledge and skills in writing semestral and diploma theses as well as writing professional articles or professionally focused editorial work.
Learning outcomes
Graduates of the course would be in addition to obtaining a basic theoretical overview of the professional style, its characteristics (different from other styles, conceptualism, intertextuality, horizontal and vertical division, styling factors, etc.) and other topics associated with this style (citation, paraphrasing, plagiarism, work with primary and secondary literature, etc.) should improve how to read professional texts, think and argue based on the reading, and how to write your own professional texts.
Syllabus
  • What is academic writing, distinctions from other functional styles, different traditions / approaches, formal terminology, literary - colloquiality, horizontal and vertical structure of text, stylistic factors objective and subjective in spoken and written texts of professional style. Reading of academic and academic texts (active, passive, internal, external). Working with secondary literature (contextualization). Genres of professional style. Argumentation in professional and academic writing. Creativity and creative writing. Professional style in relation to theory and methodology; border genres.

Teaching methods
Frontal (explanation); discussion and cooperative; practice writing and games (with lyrics); textanalytical tasks (analyzing text structure, arguments).
Assessment methods
Active participation (engaging in activities within individual meetings). Eighty percent participation. Fulfillment of the required tasks in the given term (whether it is the completion of home preparation for teaching, or the timely submission of tasks or work).
