Course objectives
The course deals with the migration and asylum policy of the European Union. The aim is to provide basic information on the development and decision-making in migration and asylum policy. Another central theme of the course is the examination of the attitudes of European institutions and Member States towards migration, especially during the so-called migration crisis. The course will be complemented by the insights of experts who deal with the topic at local and supranational level.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will be able to apply basic theoretical concepts to developments in migration and asylum policy. The student will be able to discuss the different attitudes within this policy and its determinants. The course will lead to the improvement of the student's argumentation skills.

Teaching methods
It will be a combination of frontal interpretation with seminars (discussion of literature and position papers and discussion with guest speakers). The position paper will require students to articulate their opinion, supported by verified sources. In seminars, they will attempt to defend their argument or be active in discussion with hosts. The course will conclude with an essay. Students will choose the topic of the essay during the course, and in the last class of the course, the student will present and defend the topic to the other course participants. The essay may take the form of a policy paper or a research proposal.
