- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to introduce students to research in psychotherapy and counseling with an emphasis on the practical use of methods and findings.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course students should be able to:
- understand various types of psychotherapy research, research designs, and instruments;
- search for and critically assess empirical findings in psychotherapy;
- summarize and interpret main empirical findings in psychothearpy;
- connect research and practice; be able to aim for research-informed practice. - Syllabus
- - Historical and social context of psychotherapy research. Main kinds of psychotherapy research and research designs.
- - Examples of outcome studies.
- - Outcome research: meta-analyses, Dodo bird effect, dose-effect relatiohsnip. Common factors and their relationship to techniques.
- - Measurement of psychotherapy change: standardized measures, idiosyncratic methods, and qualitative methods.
- - Psychotherapy process research, helpful and hindering events in the therapeutic process.
- - Deterioration effect and adverse effects of psychotherapy.
- - Case studies and N=1 research.
- - Qualitative research in psychotherapy.
- - Research on psychotherapist development and psychotherapy trainings, therapist effect.
