- Course objectives
- The course deals with the history of international relations from the 19th century to the present. It focuses on the rise of non-European powers, its causes, course and implications for world politics. It shows how these powers gradually adopted and modified the institutions born in Europe and used them to strengthen their position in the system of international relations.
- Learning outcomes
- Students will be able: understand the institutional and ideological context of IR in 19th and 20th century. understand the influence of Western institutions out of Europe.
- Syllabus
- 1. Introduction to the subject, acquaintance with the scope of the subject, assignment of literature. The rise of Western power and its causes 2. The political, economic and power rise of the USA in the 19th century. 3. From the Ottoman Empire to modern Turkey 4. China in world politics from the early 19th century to the end of World War I 5. The birth of modern Japan and its implications for world politics up to the end of World War I 6. Sino-Japanese rivalry 1918-1945 7. The birth of the Soviet Union 8. The USSR's path to position as a superpower 9. The role of the USSR in World War II 10. The role of the USA in World War II or the rise of a global superpower 11 Japan 1945-1991 and its foreign policy: under American supervision 12 Soviet-Chinese relations as a competition for leadership in the communist world 13 China and its foreign policy since the 1970s. The birth of a superpower for the 21st century?

- Teaching methods
- Lectures, class discussions, reading literature to broaden and deepen the knowledge acquired during lectures, utilization of position papers to analyze a subject within the course, utilization of presentations to improve presentation skills of students.
- Assessment methods
- 1. elaboration and presentation of two papers (10 minutes, in the structure of introduction of the author of the study, the main thesis of the text, own opinion on the text). 2. passing a credit written examination. This will be in the form of 5 open-ended questions graded 0-3 in the credit week. You must achieve at least 60% of the points. 3. attendance at seminars of 60% or more.
