Course objectives
The aim is to familiarize students of political science with the basic economic aspects of the preparation and implementation of defence and security policy of the state, the design, construction and functioning of the security system and national security institutions and the economic aspects of the state's involvement in the international security system in the context of the institutional realities of the Czech Republic.
Learning outcomes
The student will be able to reflect professionally on the subject matter in the context of the theory of the discipline and will have a solid factual basis to formulate professional conclusions on the given issue.
Syllabus
  • 1. Conceptualisation, institutionalisation and resourcing of the security function 2. Security and defence as an asset and production of security 3. Designing the functionality of the security institution and its construction 4. Strategic planning of security and defence system functionality 5. Provision of resources for security/defence system functionality - work factor 6. Provision of resources for the functioning of the security/defence system - labour factor (forced labour/compulsory service) 7. Provision of resources for the functioning of the security/defence system - labour factor (volunteering and personnel backup in the security system) 8. Provision of resources for the functioning of the security system - capital factor 9. Ability to conduct operations and war - use of forces and resources (militarisation, mobilisation and demobilisation of the state and armed forces) 10. Provision of resources for the functioning of the security system - the money factor 11. Macro- and micro-economic aspects of military expenditure 12. Foreign (military) policy of the state - cost-sharing in alliance and conduct of operations

Teaching methods
Lectures, discussion of selected issues based on knowledge of required literature, presentation of written position papers, group work, analysis of empirical facts and its interpretation.
Assessment methods
Students will take a final test which will be scored according to the level of correctness of the answers given. The result of the test will be the basis for the assessment of the course.
