Course objectives
Medical Sociology/Sociology of Health and Medicine explores concepts and questions related to health, illness/disease, medical treatment and healing, medical and health professions, med-pharma industry, ralationsiip of biomedicite to CAM. medicalisation. These are particularly targeted inb their relation to social and cultural institutions, norms and expectations. The goal of the course is to target a) lived experience and b) representations of medicine. Students learn about the history of the subdiscipline, core debates that have formed it and recent developments and trends shaping it today.
Learning outcomes
The graduates of this course are able to identify and summarize important events forming the subdiscipline of sociology of medicine and reflect their impact on the social practice. They will get acquianted and oriented withinh the core problems and trends targeted by current sociology of health and medicine and reflect major sources of conflict. They are competent to formulate relevant questions and analyse them in academic writing (essay) and critically reflect them in semminar debates targeting relations among actors, institutions and norms in the field of health, illness and medicine.
