Course objectives
The main aim of the course is to acquaint students with important events of the end of the 20th century from an unusual point of view, from the point of view of propaganda. The seminar is focused on the last third of the past century, specifically the seventies to the nineties. In the first part of the course, students will learn the details on the turning point in 1968, the "friendly assistance", in other words the invasion of Warsaw Pact troops and the destruction of hopes for a freer life. The seminar will also focus on normalization, the Velvet Revolution and the events that followed. Understanding the fundamental historical moments of the 20th century will be facilitated by using unique period sources - period newspapers, photographs, video and audio recordings of contemporary witnesses, samples from documentaries and popularization films. Less common promotional materials such as posters, badges or postage stamps will also be presented. The course will include discussions with interesting guests, including contemporary witnesses. The seminar will also be devoted to the issue of historiographical methods in combination with media analysis methods. The course is planned as thirteen two-hour lessons combining the form of lecture and seminar.
Learning outcomes
After completing the seminar, students will be able to characterize the essential events of Czech history that took place in the last third of the past century. They will gain knowledge of the major events of this period, including the consequences of the Prague Spring and the Velvet Revolution. They will also be able to describe the most important representatives of the power structure of the given periods. Furthermore, after completing the course, they will be able to enumerate the main features of the media culture of the given period, focusing on the propaganda in the 1970ְ’s and 1980’s, including censorship measures. They will also master the basic procedures of historiographical methods and media analysis. They will be able to enumerate the key sources, funds in archives and media banks available in the libraries in the Czech Republic.
