Prerequisites
The lecture " Introduction to the Study of Sex and Gender. Gender Structure of Society" is aimed at the students of the master degree of the Faculty for Social Studies at the Masaryk University in Brno. It proceeds as a four-hour lecture about two subjects fortnightly. The students will be expected to prepare themselves for all sessions by reading the recommended literature. Besides this students will be provided with short summary of each lesson. The lecture will end with an examination. The successful attendance of the course is awarded with 12 credit points.

Course objectives
Introduction to the Study of Sex and Gender. Gender Structure of Society Gender questions have been studied within Gender Studies from an interdisciplinary perspective till now. Gender is, besides class, ethnicity and age, an important criterion according to which modern societies are differentiated. Despite of this in sociology the gender structure of societies is neglected still. A comprehensive theory of society should include the insights into the fact that access to important roles and statuses are ascribed according to gender i.e. that rights, power and wealth are uneven distributed between men and women. The dominance of men above women called patriarchy became a subject of feminist scientific studies first. In due course theories of gender have been changed profoundly so that the latest of them renounce the existence of substantive men and women.

  • Introduction to the Study of Sex and Gender. Gender Structure of Society Gender questions have been studied within Gender Studies from an interdisciplinary perspective till now. Gender is, besides class, ethnicity and age, an important criterion according to which modern societies are differentiated. Despite of this in sociology the gender structure of societies is neglected still. The dominance of men above women called patriarchy became a subject of feminist scientific studies first. In due course theories of gender have been changed profoundly so that the latest of them renounce the existence of substantive men and women. Therefore the introduction of gender issue into sociology has to face a double problem. On the first step the common-sense and the ontic concepts ot gender should be deconstructed theoretically. On the second step it ought to be shown how gender is reproduced socially within different substructures of society. In the first part it is necessary to deal with feminist epistemology and with theories of gender identities, proceeding from biological to sociological ones and ending with radical deconstructivism. In the second part concrete substructures of society i.e. law, labour market, social control and criminality will be analysed empirically The lecture " Introduction to the Study of Sex and Gender.
