- Course objectives (in Czech)
- Since the 1990s, an international debate has raged within the environmental sociology community between proponents of Ecological Modernization Theory (EMT) and Treadmill of Production (TOP) theory. EMT suggests that environmental quality improvements are possible -- and actually taking place -- within existing socio-economic systems. TOP scholars, in contrast, suggest environmental problems are the result of the socio-economic imperatives of the global capitalist system. In this seminar, we will discuss selected readings from the two schools of thought and learn how the debate is driving much of environmental sociological thinking in the 21st century.
