Course objectives
The complex phenomenon of Islamic radicalism remains one of the most actual issues of present security studies. The opening lectures will be aimed at Islam as complex social system, but next lectures will also describe some concrete regions of the Islamic world. For example model case of Egypt, cradle of Islamic radicalism, or Islamic revolution in Shiite Iran will be topics of respective lectures. The course is related to some less known regions as well, for example Yemen. Another lecture describes an issue of suicidal terrorism and martyr cult in Islam. The projecting of photos from selected regions of the Islamic world (e.g. Iraq, Yemen...)is part of course too. After completing the course a student should know the issue of rise and development of Islam, history of Islamic empire and developing of Islamic law. Students should also understand to the radical Islamic groups in some important countries of the Islamic world. Projecting of photos will give the students deeper etnographical and socioeconomical point of view to certain Islamic countries.
Syllabus
  • 1. Rise and development of Islam, history of early Islamic society,key figure of Prophet Muhammad, influence of Christianity and Judaism, description of Arab and Islamic world. 2. Development of Islamic empire, founding and developing of Islamic law, Islamic schism (division to Sunni and Shiite branch of Islam), Islamic reformism in 19th and 20th century. 3. Islamic radicalism in Egypt - origination of Muslim Brotherhood,radical Islamic groups during Sadat era, Mubarak regime confrontation with Islamic radicals etc. Other issues: Iran and Islamic revolution in 1979 Suicidal terrorism and martyr cult in Islam Islamic radicalism in Yemen The lectures are enriched by projecting of photos from selected regions of the Islamic world (Iraq, Yemen etc.)
