Course objectives
This course is taught at Bachelor's degree program. Its nature is almost exclusively experiential, based on introspective monitoring of experience by means of a modification of the Gendlin's focusing technique. Focusing is originally a method of psychotherapy and mental hygiene, and as such it serves the purpose of personal problem solving, deeper self-cognition and self-development. Students will acquire skills both in this form of focusing and in using focusing as a research method. Great portion of this course will take place "in the field" - it will take a form of so called listening walks, during which participants' experience will be registered.

At the end of this course, students should be able to carry out controlled introspection, specifically:
- to apply the focusing technique to dealing with their own feelings and personal topics/problems;
- to apply the focusing technique in contact with outer environment and register emerging feelings;
- to distinguish the influence of own's actual emotional tuning (psychosomatic setting) upon how they perceive the surrounding (sonic) environment
and they will obtain qualitativelly new experience in relation to sonic environment.

A secondary goal of this course is research data collection - recordings of participants' feeling, collected during seminars and within semester paper, will be used as research material (anonymity is guaranteed).
Syllabus
  • 1st meeting: introduction to psychological study of sonic environment, introspection in psychological research, introduction to focusing
  • 2nd – 5th meeting: focusing training and practice (with emphasis on its utilization in research)
  • 6th – 11th meeting: listening walks through selected places, experience registering
  • 12th meeting: reflections on the course, experiences, discussion on the research method, acquired data and interpretation of these
  • In case of unfavourable weather condition the program may be changed (exploration of the inner environment of the building or theoretical lecture with discussion).
