Course objectives
The course is prepared for students of master degree study of psychology and psychotherapy and is finished by examination. Lecture will present to students basic foundations of psychiatric diagnostics, biological corelates of mental disorders and contemporary possibilities of treatment of mental disorders. The course is built not only on the theoretical and contextual knowledge of diagnostic categories, but also on skills needed in clinical practice. The lecture is followed by discussion.
Main objectives can be summarized as follows: brief information about history and development of psychiatry; information about models of mental disorders; information about diagnostic systems and their application to clinical practice; basic information about psychopharmacotherapy.
At the end of the course students will manifest their ability of transparent desription of a clinical case study, diagnostic thinking, independent clinical consideration and work with literature.

  • 1. history and development of psychiatry
  • 2. models of mental disorders
  • 3. diagnostic systems and their application in practice
  • 4. psychopharmakotherapy
  • 5. selected diagnostic categories - diagnostics, psychodynamics, biologicl corelates, treatment (Schizophrenia and psychotic symptoms. Mood disorders. Organic mental disorders.

Assessment methods
Conditions for completing the course (examination):
Writing a final seminar paper.
Examination is in the written form of evalution of the final seminar paper.

Requirements for the final seminar paper:
Clinical case study of a person with mental disorder with description of the kontext (family an social situation, relationships, somatic deseases etc.), actual difficulties and their history, diagnostic and treatment considerations, literar references.
