- Course objectives
- The course for undergraduate students follows up the course in Historical Sociology. On the basis of the difference between the history of concepts and history of problems, it will explain the evolution of the relationship between historiography and social theories of the New and Modern Ages. The main goal of the course is to contextualize – deeply and from a cultural-historical perspective – the problems of historical sociology.
- Syllabus
- (1) Experience and theory; logical and historical; explanation and understanding. Methodological contention at the turn of 19th and 20th centuries. Ideal type as a solution (G. von Schmoller, Carl Meger, Max Weber).
- (2) History and theory: the dual understanding of theory in historical and societal disciplines; metadisciplinary theory and theory theories related to a particular subject; history and memory.
- (3) Historical cognition vs. Sociological theory; historically singular vs. comparatively general; the dual use of theory in historical social science; example and generalization (W. Dilthey, O. Hintze, G. von Bülow, „Masaryk‘s sect“ a Goll’s school).
- (4) „Historical“ and social action: subjectively meant, objectified and „nomic“ sense.
- (5) Constellation, systems, structures; continuity and discontinuity.
- (6) Cultural change; causations and “counterfactual development”.
- (7) Classes, strata, groups; generational problems.
- (8) Power, dominion and violence.
- (9) Culture and knowledge.
