Course objectives
The course aims to provide students with elementary concepts, features and issues of development studies. The first part of the course focuses on defining the field, historical context of international development and further on theories of development. Second part draws attention to political and social conditions of development. Third part is devoted to economic development.
At the end of this course, students should be able to: understand and explain the basic concepts of development; analyze and assess situation of a particular country from a perspective of development studies.

Teaching methods
The course consists mainly of lectures. Students are introduced to the basic theoretical concepts that are subsequently supported by examples. The examples aim to motivate students to think about practical relevance of discussed concepts. The purpose of case studies is to develope students' ability to apply the introduced concepts to the situation of a particular developing country.
Assessment methods
Requirements of the Course: To qualify for the final examination students have to achieve at least 12 points out of 20. Points can be achieved by submiting a written assignment - case study on particular developing country (max. 10 points) and elaborating midterm test (max. 10 points). The grading of the final examination will be clarified.
