Course objectives
This course is focused on the conflict resolution strategies. Students will learn the theoretic background of interpersonal conflicts and they will practise their conflict resolutions skills as well. They will acquaint with the principles of group facilitation and mediation process. At the end of this course, students should be able to analyse the conflict situations, to understand the aspects of interpersonal conflicts, and they will learn effective techniques for avoiding and dealing with a conflict situations.
Syllabus
  • (1) Importance of interpersonal communication in conflict resolution process (communication process and factors effecting communication process – social perception, communication barriers, communication styles, verbal and nonverbal communication, questioning techniques – types of questions, feedback)
  • (2) Understanding of interpersonal conflicts (Negative a positive aspects of conflicts, cycle of conflict. Theories of conflicts – conflict development, terms and conceptions of conflicts. Typologies of conflict situations – interpersonal and intrapersonal conflicts, conflicts of meanings, attitudes, beliefs, and values. Conflict resolution styles. Phases of conflict resolution.)
  • (3) Dealing with a problem situations. (definition of problem, analyses of interests, formulation of criteria, identifying and evaluation of coping strategies).
  • (4) Group facilitation (basic facilitation techniques, facilitator competencies, communication with the problem participants, coping with problem situation in facilitation process).
  • (5)Mediation (theories and basic principles of mediation, history of mediation, mediator competencies, phases of mediation process, indication for mediation)

Course is based on reading of relevant literature (books, papers] as well as on face to face communication (by using of different methods and technigues of group facilitation and communication). Each student's final evaluation is based on the following components: an acceptation of paper and exam (written test).
