Course objectives
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with basic problems of energy security and functioning of energy sector in the Czech Republic. The course is structured to provide comprehensive picture of Czech energy sector, its historical development and geopolitical position of the Czech Republic in the European Union. Topics covered include detailed analysis of coal, nuclear, oil and gas sector, as well as energy and environmental policy of the EU and selected contemporary issues. Thanks to successful completion of the course students will be able to analyze actors and characteristics of energy security policies of the Czech Republic, both in relation to the EU and to the other major actors, such as the Russian Federation. In the second half of the course, students will familiarize themselves with specifics of energy sectors of the Visegrad countries member states. Graduates of the course will be able to understand problematic energy issues of Visegrad countries and thus comprehend energy security of the whole region of Central Europe.

Teaching methods
Lectures involve class discussions and require active participation; seminar papers improve the ability of students to summarize an issue in the field of energy policy of the Czech Republic and Visegrad countries and to evaluate it critically; seminar papers improve the ability of students to analyze particular issues; readings serve to broaden and deepen the spectrum of knowledge students acquire during lectures.
Assessment methods
Active participation in class; seminar preparations, composition of seminar paper, mid-term test, final written test.
