Course objectives
The aim of the course is the interpretation of the North Atlantic Alliance in connection with the security architecture of Europe. Thanks to the successful completion of the course, students will be able to clarify the historical circumstances of the creation of NATO, to describe and explain organizational structures of NATO, to characterize decision-making mechanisms and to analyze changes of the North Atlantic Alliance in the context of the end of the bipolarity. Next to it, students get the ability to assess the role of other security institutions in Europe, especially Western European Union, and to evaluate the process of building the ESDP within the European Union.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction into the study, presentations, study literature. Security and security policy, development and reflection, basic terminology.
  • 2. Historical circumstances of the emergence of NATO. The emergence and evolution of NATO.
  • 3. Institutional structure and decision-making mechanism of NATO.
  • 4. Rebellion of France.
  • 5. The creation, evolution and disappearance of the Warsaw Pact.
  • 6. NATO's strategic concepts.
  • 7. Transformations of the Alliance in the new strategic environment, relationship towards Central and Eastern Europe.
  • 8. NATO and the Czech Republic.
  • 9. The Alliance and crisis regions.
  • 10. Trends in the development of military capabilities of NATO.
  • 11. Credited discussion, presentation and defense of presentations about NATO which were not presented to the given topic I.
  • 12. Presentation and defense of presentations about NATO which were not presented to the given topic II.
  • 13. Consultations to the written test.

Teaching methods
lectures; essays to improve the ability of students to analyze the problem of North Atlantic Treaty Organization and to work with primary and secondary sources; readings to broaden and deepen the spectrum of knowledge students acquire during lectures; presentations to improve presentation skills of students
Assessment methods
The course is completed by an examination. To pass the exam, it is necessary to present or hand over a presentation, to elaborate an essay, and pass a written test (with the success rate of 60 % points) on the compulsory literature and the presented matter.
