Gender is one of the main organizing criteria distributing social status and creating identity. What is at stake, though, is not only individual social actors. Gender structuredness is characteristic of the symbolic organization of society, social institutions and interactions. This class will enable students to overcome stereotypical binary and/or essentialist view of gender and to proceed towards analytically more productive understanding of this category. Students will be presented with an overview of the core sociological theories and conceptualizations of gender. - Syllabus
