Course objectives
The aim of the course entitled Chapters from the history of world media II is to familiarise students with the development of journalism in the key countries of the Euro-American civilisation area (Great Britain, France, Germany, and USA) from the end of the 18th century to the second half of the 20th century. The course focuses on the rise of the daily press in the last third of the 18th century and in the 19th century, on the process of differentiating the press into elite and mass press, as well as the technological and organisational development, the development of press regulation (censorship, licence and privileges systems, and economic barriers), and the fight for freedom of public criticism.
At the end of the course students should be able to: characterize the discussed issues, outline the media development in this historical period, analyse the causes of media development, examining their role in societal, political, economic and cultural contexts.
