- Course objectives
- The course deals with methods of the IR research. Students will learn the background of the IR research and practical application of some selected research procedures. The course focuses on the application of case study methodology, content analyses, grounded theory and qualitative comparative analyses.
The overall aims of the course are to understand the IR methodology and to use the above mentioned procedures in research. - Syllabus
- 1. Introduction into the course (requirements, outputs, literature) and special compulsory literature. A brief overview of the IR research and the basic terms (science, hypothesis, paradigm etc.).
- 2. Developing effective research proposals.
- 3. Case study research I.
- 4. Case study research II. 5. Process tracing I. 6. Reading week. 7. Process tracing II.

- Teaching methods
- Lectures serve exclusively only as an introduction into the issue of the course. It is assumed that the main part of the subject matter will be managed through self-studying of the special literature. Practical exercise serve to improve the ability of students to use the given methods and computer software in research. Finally presentations serve among others to improve presentation skills of students.
- Assessment methods
- During the course students have to elaborate, defend and hand one research project, and pass 4 mid-written tests (success rate 50 %) consisting of the compulsory literature and the final credit written test.
