Course objectives
The students will take up with the modern criminology and social work with offenders of the 20th century and its theoretical concepts. Special attention is dedicated to the methods of criminology and penology research and actual problems of penal justice. The basic concepts of the penal law are made clear including also basic documents of European Union about penal justice. After that the rest of the course is divided into 2 parts.
In part 1 – criminological part – is speaking about social pathology, types of criminality and its social impact. Also is presented actual progress in criminality, with special attention in computer, property, violent, economic, drug-related, prostitution-related and organized criminality.
Part 2 is devoted to the questions of punishment. Students are taking up with the history of penal ideas, European and Czech concepts of the penal law and penal system and types of punishments. Also is talking about execution of the punishment, its efficiency and postpenitentiary care.

  • Object and content of criminology and its methodology
  • The theory of criminal science and delinquency
  • Juridical, criminological and sociological evaluation of offence of violent, acquisitive offence and sexual offence – causes and basis
  • Prevention of criminal offences
  • Penal policy in Czech Republic and international action against the criminality
  • Organized crime
  • Crime in Czech Republic – political and religious extremism as a criminological problem
  • The philosophy of the punishment and history of penal system
  • International conventions about torture and inhuman treatment; Standard minimum rules for the treatment of prisoners and related recommendations
  • Punitive sanctions in Czech penal code
  • Execution of a confinement, the problematic of social rehabilitation and reintegration the offenders after release from prison
  • Comparison of the Czech and European prison system
  • Possibility of excursion into the prison
