Passing PdF:ADAPT_AJ Adaptivní test Aj with the result indicating that you are on the B1 level or higher (https://is.muni.cz/auth/el/1441/podzim2017/ADAPT_AJ/index.qwarp). Students on the B1 level are able to communicate in English, express their opinions as well as summarize academic texts.

Course objectives
The aim of the course is to open the horizons of the students and to enable them practicing their English within intercultural topics. Furthermore, they will further develop skills that are essential for academia, such as presenting, academic writing, note-taking, critical thinking and reflecting. The course will also be a framework for widening their vocabulary and activating known or critical grammar structures in English.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to:

- discuss and debate on a variety of important contemporary issues in the theory and practice of intercultural communication
- write and revise a project proposal in English
- present efficiently and engagingly in English, and respond to their colleagues’ presentations with constructive feedback
- write a 5-paragraph essay
- prepare and present a poster and a conference abstract

  • culture (introduction, sharing, reflecting, what is culture)
  • language and culture (idioms, jokes, stories that we have in us)
  • body language in cultures (how not to offend...)
  • stereotypes (nation, gender, age, religion...)
  • cultural onion (Hofstede´s concept of layers - symbols, heroes, rituals, values)
  • Lewis model - role plays
  • Hofstede´s dimensions - analyzing websites from different cultures
  • youth subcultures
  • empathy, global citizenship
  • intercultural competence (the step beyond the intercultural communication, global citizenship, volunteering...)

Teaching methods
discussions based on readings and videos, self-reflection and peer reflection, presentations, writing assignments
Assessment methods
Students are going to work on written and spoken assignments that have a total score of 100points. The range of final assessment is as follows:
100 - 93 = A
92 - 85 = B
84 - 77 = C
76 - 69 = D
98 - 61 = E
60 and below = F
Assignments: group presentation, poster presentation, abstract writing, essay... A portfolio of assignments will be discussed and reflected on in the exam period.
