Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to understand and explain basic features of the development of Czechoslovak politics in the period 1969-1989 with specific attention dedicated to the type of the regime and relationship between the state and the society.

  • 1. Ressistance against Soviet power and the leadership of Gustav Husak
  • 2. The purges in KSČ and in the society
  • 3. Czechs and Slovaks in the exile
  • 4. Charta 77
  • 5. The methods and tools used for regime stabilization
  • 6. The dissent
  • 7. The unsuccessful efforts of the Husak group to make a partial reforms
  • 8. Demoralization and the ideological decline of the regime
  • 9. Gorbačov and perestroiky in USSR
  • 10. The struggles for perestroika in Czechoslovakia
  • 11. The intensification of anti-regime activities at the end of eighties
  • 12. The churches and communist regime
  • 13. November 1989
