Course objectives
The course is primarily designed for students who wish to use qualitative methodology in their dissertations. Using a serias of lectures and practical exrcises, the aim of the course is to make students acquainted with general principles of coding, categorization, and theme creation, as well as interpretation adn application of various perspectives in qualitative research. The course is not specifically focused on a single qualitative approach to qualitative analysis. Instead, it is focused on a common basis and mastering of analytic skills. At the end of the course students should be able to: - choose an appropriate approach to analysis - analyze textual data independently - reflect on perspectives and biases they introduce in their analysis
Syllabus
  • (1) Data creation – principles, hints. Code, category, theme, memo, the role of research question. (2) Bottom-up a top-down approach to analysis. Good practice in coding. Computer assissted qualitative data analysis sotfware (CAQDAS). (3) Hierarchization of categories, coding of relationships between categories, theoretical coding, cross-case analysis, differences among various qualitative approaches (thematic analysis, interpretative phenomenological analysis, graounded theory method,...). Deduction, induction, abduction, interpretation, contextualization. (4) Integration of the results of analysis. Consensus as a means of validation. Results formulation, method description. (5) Consultations of individual dissertation projects.
