Course objectives
The aim of the course is the interpretation of the NATO issue in connection with the security architecture of Europe. The course is mainly focused on the clarification of the historical circumstances of the NATO creation, decision-making mechanisms, NATO expeditionary operations, NATO enlargement and changes of NATO after the End of the Cold War. The course touches other security institutions in Europe as well, especially Warsaw Pact, Western European Union and newly also the process of building an ESDP within the European Union.
Learning outcomes
Understanding the main principles of NATO. Learn the NATO history. Understand the main differences between NATO and other security organizations in Europe. Understand the main trends in the contemporary NATO.

The NATO during the Cold War, the Washington Treaty, How does NATO work? 3. NATO and France. 4. NATO and the End of the Cold War 5. Warsaw Pact in Cold War 6. NATO after the End of the Cold War. Mid-term test 1. 7. NATO enlargement 8. NATO out of area military operations 9. NATO and 1999 war against Yugoslavia. 10. NATO and Russia 11. NATO and Ukraine. 12. NATO in Afghanistan. Presentation of an expert from the field. 13. NATO military adaptation. Mit term test 2.

Assessment methods
1. To complete the course and receive credits, every student is required to pass two mid-term written tests at 60%. 2. Deliver an essay (1-1500 words) on given topic/or deliver a presentation from given literature. 3. Participation in seminar devoted to Afghanistan. 4. Attendance 80%.
