Course objectives
The aim of the course History of Czech Media in the Era of the First Republic is to acquaint students with the development of Czech media during the First Republic. The course focuses on the character and structure of the media in the First Republic, party and extra-party press, the phenomenon of Lidové noviny, Radiojournal and news film.
In the context of party-political press, the course follows the issue of the relationship between the political party and the printed media, programmatic background and internal confrontation, ways of financing the party press and forms of its distribution as well as its structure (diaries, regional newspapers groups, magazines and revue, print in Moravia and Brno). The course is planned as thirteen two-hour lessons combining the form of a lecture and a seminar where the presented topics are discussed.
Learning outcomes
Students gain the theoretical and factual knowledge that allowed him to understand the development of the media in the historical context and to explain the historical processes that fundamentally influence the role of media in contemporary society. Students also acquire the skills that allowed him to analyze the power, political, socio-economic and cultural contexts of contemporary media products.

  • Week 7: Press of the Czechoslovak People's Party (ČSL)
  • Week 8: Print of the Czechoslovak Socialist Party (ČSS) / National Socialist Party (ČSNS)
  • 9th week: Print of the Czechoslovak Social Democratic Workers' Party (ČSDSD)
  • 10th week: Press of opposition political parties (press of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia (KSČ); press of extreme right-wing opposition - National League (NL), National Fascist Community (NOF)
