Cíle předmětu
The course will discuss the relationship between media and politics. This relationship has been described as a tango, thus a dance in which either one or the other can take the lead. Starting from this metaphor, we will first discuss ‘Theoretical Foundations’, i.e., the concept of mediatization in the hybrid media system to understand the different dimensions of this process from a theoretical point of view. Following this, we will discuss empirical research on the mutual influence of politics and the media, focusing first on ‘Politics and Professional Journalism’. Given the increasing hybridity of the media system, we will also look into ‘the Role of Social Media’, specifically focusing on the debate about fake news, mis- and disinformation, and post-truth. As a result, participants will have a broad overview of the debate revolving around a relationship that is crucially shaping our every-day political experiences.

Short presentation of assigned reading in class, in class participation and summary (around 350-500w) of main thoughts after each session (40% of the final grade); final assignment: structured review of at least 5 research articles on a topic related to the class (around 2000-3000w) (60% of the final grade).
