- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is the interpretation of the NATO issue in connection with the security architecture of Europe. The course is mainly focused on the clarification of the historical circumstances of the NATO creation, decision-making mechanisms, NATO expeditionary operations, NATO enlargement and changes of NATO after the End of the Cold War. The course touches other security institutions in Europe as well, especially Warsaw Pact, Western European Union and newly also the process of building an ESDP within the European Union.
- Learning outcomes
- Understanding the main principles of NATO. Learn the NATO history. Understand the main differences between NATO and other security organizations in Europe. Understand the main trends in the contemporary NATO. To learn about NATO's response to Russian aggression against Ukraine.
- Syllabus
- 1. Introduction to the subject, introduction to the course parameters. Historical circumstances of the formation of European security architecture after World War II. The emergence of NATO. 2. Washington Treaty, decision-making mechanism, organisational structure. NATO during the Cold War: 1950s-1960s. 3. NATO in the 1970s, 1980s and the end of the Cold War. 4. France and NATO. 5. NATO adaptation after the end of the Cold War, transformation of strategic concepts. The current NATO strategic concept. 6. NATO expansion after the end of the Cold War. 7. Military crisis management operations: contribution to crisis management. 8. NATO and the 1999 war against Yugoslavia. 9. The defeat of NATO and the West in Afghanistan. 10. NATO and Russia after the end of the Cold War. 11. NATO, Ukraine, the outbreak of war in the Donbas and hybrid warfare. 12. NATO, Ukraine and Russian aggression in 2022. 13. - Teaching methods
- Lectures, literature study, discussion. The teacher expects students to come to lectures prepared and to have read the relevant literature.
- Assessment methods
- In order to be awarded credit, it is necessary to Write a credit test (30 minutes) of 5 questions graded 0-3 points from the required literature, videos and PPT presentations provided by the teacher. In total, you must score at least 60% of the maximum possible score on the test, i.e. 9 points. The test will be written via IS MU.
