Course objectives
Students will learn and expand the technical fundamentals of audio and video recording and processing. In this practically oriented course, students will learn how to operate the equipment used to capture audiovisual material, select appropriate equipment, combine it, and eliminate factors that degrade the quality of the recording. In addition, they will learn the basics and advanced options for editing and processing material (format selection, software control, export, etc.). The main goal of the course is for students to acquire technical skills for the work of an editor, or a member of a small news crew, corresponding to current trends in journalism.
Learning outcomes
The student will learn to recognize the art forms and means of expression of individual digital genres. The student will be able to prepare video material for digital streaming, podcasting and other forms of visual distribution, including subsequent analysis. The student will be able to list the main themes of the subject matter taught and lead a professional discussion on them. Skills - practical and functional - the graduate of the course will master practical methods of working in applications designed for television and multimedia pre-production, production and analysis of digital material. The student will master key work in  compositing applications for advanced audiovisual production. The student will be able to practically configure and run a television virtual set for a small television studio. The student will thus have enhanced competences in the production of visual and audiovisual material and its preparation for subsequent analysis on the Internet using methods and applications evaluating viewer/viewer and user behaviour.
Syllabus
  • 1. introduction: introduction of the subject + determination of the level of competence + assignment of the task - survey (on Canon digital cameras)
  • 2. technology - introduction of AV equipment and software
  • 3. i) evaluation of the assignment - survey ii) audio without video - hardware: dictaphones, microphones, ports; software: Sound Forge import, export, voice over, equalizer, dynamics
  • 4. recording (camera + sound) + assignment (input 30-60 seconds)
  • 5. task evaluation + video output correction options in post-production
  • 6. basics of editing, advanced work with editing software (reportage + illustrative video) + audio assignment (1 minute voice over)
  • 7. evaluation of the audio assignment + audio post-production
  • 8. mobile journalism + mobile assignment (video from the field + editing directly on the mobile phone)
  • 9. evaluation of the assignment, studio recording
  • 10. ENG recording (field recording, live broadcast)

Teaching methods
The course is designed as a seminar. The students will perform mainly practical exercises in cooperation with the teachers. In addition, they will work independently on assigned tasks.
Assessment methods
Attendance and active participation in seminars is required (max. 2 unexcused absences, in case of a third absence it is necessary to prepare a substitute assignment). Preparation and submission of 4 partial assignments.
