Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce students to advanced issues of legal regulation of the media, to understand the systematics of media law and useful legal concepts for their journalistic practice. The course is taught in a practical and interactive manner, with an emphasis on up-to-date media law topics. A related goal is to be able to quickly navigate themselves in legal information, read judgments effectively, and understand basic legal terminology.
Learning outcomes
Student will be able to:
- Understand the basics of media law;
- to explain basic legal institutions in the field of media law;
- use relevant legal information in media practice;
- to interpret the basic legislation of the area;
- Provide reasons for individual steps in media regulation and speech.
Syllabus
  • 1. Why media law? The essential legal provisions of media law. Media law framework. - 2. The concept of freedom of expression. Key elements and position of freedom of expression in the system of fundamental rights. Characteristics of speech and analysis of different types of speech. The basic principles of the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights and the Constitutional Court on freedom of expression. - 3. Copyright basics for practical application in journalism and related fields. The use of AI tools from a copyright perspective. - 4. Protection of personal data in journalistic work. European approach, GDPR. - 5. Regulation of online platforms and social networks, European media regulation, DSA. - 6. Journalism and criminal law - potential conflicts. Protection of the journalists in the Czech legal system. Safety of journalists. - 7. Protection of journalistic sources. Interference with journalists' freedom of expression. - 8. Free access to information. Practical examples of use for journalists and newsrooms. - 9. Possibilities of using AI systems in newsrooms, possibilities vs. legal restrictions. - 10. Hate speech. Specifics of online expressions. - 11. Legal regulation of disinformation and fake news. - 12. Summary and evaluation of the final assignment.
