It then applies these concepts to case studies from the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa, the Balkans, Latin America and Eastern Europe. Topics such as ethnic conflict, religiously motivated violence, conflicts over resources, and the power ambitions of regional actors are discussed and analyzed. Attention is paid to state and non-state armed actors, the different levels of armed violence ranging from intrastate conflicts to interstate conflicts to great power conflicts, and the different dynamics of conflicts over the time period presented are emphasized.

Attendance at the lectures is compulsory and the knowledge gained from them will be the subject of a final colloquium by which students will successfully complete the course and fulfil their course obligations.
- Assessment methods
- Teaching takes the form of lectures, for which students prepare by reading the required literature. The course ends with an oral colloquium. All three teachers will participate in the colloquium and the situation in the regions discussed and their possible future development will be discussed.
