Course objectives
The main objectives of the course are the following:
to acquainte students with the basics of botany with respect to the nature and landscape conservation and to the endangered species; to identify the causes of endangerement and possibilities of their protection.
At the end of the course students should be able to understand and explain range of topics ranking from the population biology of species, methods of time and space vegatation changes to vegetation data analysis.
Learning outcomes
Students learn to recognize about 200 important plants species of our nature and in the form of essays will describe the plant community in the selected locality. Through excursions and field determinations of the species, the students will learn the nature of their school surroundings, and they will also try out the determination of plants in the field. Students will acquire knowledge of plants in relation to the natural environment in which they grow and the environmental threats that threaten nature.
Syllabus
  • Main topics (a detailed syllabus with dates for the current semester is published in the Study Materials of the course):
  • - identification of tree species during the vegetative dormancy period (terrain)
  • - Woods, Oak-woods – forests of lower elevations, human civilization and forests of lower elevations, stumps. Transformation and degradation of our floodplain forests.
  • Spring aspect and forests of lower elevations, herbs and cleared forests (ancient forests), potential vegetation, biotopes.
  • Excursion to a non-forest reserve – PR Kamenný vrch
  • Spring aspect and forests of lower elevations
  • Beech forests – forests of middle elevations and forests on scree, limestone, stages of primeval forest. Forest management and monocultures instead of beech forests.
  • Mountain forests, Šumava
  • Meadows and pastures, Fields and wastelands
  • Invasive alien plant species and archaeophytes
  • Water bodies, wetlands and peatlands, biodiversity, dynamics of watercourses

Teaching methods
A combination of lectures and presentation written essay about the selected species.
Assessment methods
The course is finished by a written examination. Students receive points for final written test and an essay. The exact conditions of the point evaluation for the test and essays is published in the section “Study materials”.
