Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the history and present of the Nové Mlýny Waterworks. The reservoirs are one of the most important wintering or migration stops for waterfowl, part of the wetlands is classified as an area of international importance under the Ramsar Convention; the middle reservoir is a nature reserve and part of Natura 2000. As part of the excursion, the students will receive an explanation from the Czech Ornithological Society experts about the reservoir's origin and management, as well as its benefits and controversies. The excursion will include observation of common and rare bird species (with a focus on the seasonal migration of geese, ducks, but also sea eagles, for example) and other fauna and flora in the context of specific habitats in the area (floodplain forest, wetlands, rock formations). There will be a walk along the reservoir dam with an example of the impact of the construction and management of the reservoir on nature and landscape, as well as a visit to other interesting places in the area (hiking shoes and suitable clothing required). Transportation is provided by the department. Optionally, it is possible to participate in the observation of the morning flight (approx. 5.15) by arrangement with the teacher.
Learning outcomes
Using the example of a specific site, learners will combine theoretical knowledge about the history and management of protected areas with the demonstration of specific phenomena in the field. In the framework of ornithological interpretation and observation, they will also learn the basic distinguishing features of typical waterfowl species and other flora and fauna typical of the surrounding habitats in the spring season.
