Course objectives
- Get to know deep ecology as a particular kind of response to the ecological crisis.
- Gain experience with approaches to the world based on personal bodily experience.
- Explore the possibilities of such approaches for overcoming the alienation between humans and the non-human world.
Learning outcomes
By completing the course, the student* will gain: - Practical skills to explore the world through personal physical, sensory and aesthetic experience.
- Theoretical and practical knowledge of the Cooperative inquiry research method.
- Greater sensitivity to other forms of being in the world.
Syllabus
  • Rough outline and proposal of topics (content and order may change to the extent that the content will be participatory):
  • - Introduction to deep ecology: an inquiry into deeper causes of environmental problems, the response of deep ecology.
  • - Alienation, separateness vs. interconnectedness, entanglement.
  • - The role of place, relationship to a place.
  • - Thinking, perception, feeling and intuition and their role in knowing the world.
  • - Mindfulness, listening, openness vs. closedness, disconnection. Their roles.
  • - Individual vs. social dimensions of alienation and possibilities for change.
  • - Emotions, defences, resilience.

Teaching methods
Cooperative inquiry, transformative learning, personal field practice, field diary, reading, reflection on experience
Assessment methods
The course is mainly about your own experience. The student* will creatively transform this into entries in the field diary and will reflect on it continuously in the seminars. She will then present her field diary as part of the colloquium and then reflect on her experiences throughout the course. Assessment will be given on the basis of the completed diary and reflection on the recorded experiences at the colloquium.
