Course objectives
At the end of the course students will be able to talk about their future profession of a lawyer in general. They will be able to define key concepts and explain German system of law, especially in the following areas: Sources of law, Civil and public law, main categories of civil and public law; Lawyers at work, education, range of work.
Syllabus
  • Topics for reading comprehension, assisted discussion and terminology 1. Introduction: programme of the course, literature, Masaryk University, Faculty of Law in Brno 2. Legal studies in Germany, in Austria and in Switzerland 3. Legal professions 4. Essential concepts of law 5. Fundamental rights - the rights of citizens, human rights, the right to liberty 6. The Constitution of Germany 7. The Constitution of Austria, The Constitution of Switzerland 8. State authorities of Germany - the Bundestag, the Bundesrat, Federal President, the Federal Government, the Federal Constitutional Court 9. Civil law - natural and artificial persons (legal entities), legal title to rights and duties, legal capacity 10. Civil law - legal acts, contract 11. Civil law - declaration of intention 12. Final test (vocabulary, grammar, knowledge)

Teaching methods
Interactive language seminar, analysis of legal texts, reading comprehension, listening comprehension, independent speaking
Assessment methods
The course is taught in the form of seminars. It is ended by a credit awarded on the basis of an active participation in class discussions, 100% attendance and a final credit test (vocabulary, grammar, knowledge). The required success rate of tests is 70%. Systematic work with e-learning programme will be rewarded by a bonus of 1 up to 3 points.
