- The course is offered to students of any study field.
- Course objectives
- The course focuses on the issue of interpretation of law, i.e. its cognition for the purpose of its application or argumentation. The course builds on the issues generally discussed in the Master's degree program. The added value lies in the emphasis on the specifics of the interpretation of autonomous legal systems (European Union law and international law) and law chosen on the basis of private international law norms. The specificities of interpretation in these areas should be well understood by the graduate after taking this course.
- Learning outcomes
- The student will be able to understand the different methods of interpretation and their weight and importance in the interpretation of international, EU and foreign law.
- Syllabus
- 1. the meaning and purpose of interpretation of law, a reminder of the rules of interpretation of national law
- 2. the bodies interpreting the law (with particular reference to the Court of Justice of the EU)
- 3. the specifics of the interpretation of public international law
- 4. specifics of the interpretation of EU law
- 5. the specifics of the interpretation of private international law

- Teaching methods
- Three individual consultations on each of the topics listed in the syllabus.
- Assessment methods
- The student will be evaluated on the basis of continuous performance demonstrated in individual consultations during the semester. The evaluation will focus on the ability to work independently, to understand the subject matter and to communicate and explain the knowledge learned, thus demonstrating a good command of it, will be assessed.
