Course objectives
At the end of the course, the student will be: able to understand and explain the concept of extra-legal factors influencing the judicial decisionmaking; able to employ meothods which are appropriate to identify and quantify such influences; able to desing a scientific study examining factors that influence the judicial decisionmaking.

Syllabus
  • Introduction. What determines judicial decision-making? How to examine factors influencing judicial decisionmaking? Basic problems of empirical legal research (plus designing a quantitative legal study). Basic problems of applied statistics in legal research. Judicial decision-making and idelology. Judicial decision-making and "structural problems". Judicial decision-making and public opinion. Judicial decision-making and the parties.

Teaching methods
Lectures, in-class discussion, guided teamwork.
Assessment methods
At the end of the course, students wil be required to design an empirical study examining extra-legal influences on judicial decision-making in the Czech Republic. The evaluation will be based on the quality of the project (including how it accounts for theoretical and practical problems discussed throughout the course).
