Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with particularities of French of court decisions (vocabulary and grammar, form and content), to examine various judgements of both branches of French judiciary (administrative and general matters), to work with judicature of international institutions (ECJ, ECHR), to emphasise the importance of studying judicature (to develop the ability of explaining facts, considering the application of texts, decision reasoning).
Syllabus
  • Topics : 1.Judiciary in France. Institutions and their competence. Personnel. 2.Constitutional board. 3.Competence court and administrative judiciary. Analysis of judgements. 4.General judiciary. Business matters. Summary proceedings. 5.Civil matters. Appeal (form). Analysis of judgement in appeal. 6.Cassation court. 7.Criminal matters. Statement. Jury trial. Informing the public about cases in newspapers. The influence of judgement formulation on the language of the news. 8.ECJ. Precendence of the European law. Action for abolishing a rule. Complaint against a member state for breaking a rule. 9.Grievance board for refugees. Studying the granting of the refugee status in France. 10.ECHR. Protection of human rights. Analysis of decisions. Concurrent and contradictory opinions of judges.
