- Course objectives
- At the end of the course students should understand the operation of the English Legal System.
- Syllabus
- This course offers students an introduction to the operation of the English Legal System. The nature of the common law tradition, where case law and legislation intertwine, will be examined, as will a range of decided cases. The court structure will be explored, as well as methods of settling disputes without resorting to the courts (this is called alternative dispute resolution). There will be negotiation exercise for students to do in class too. There will also be a brief explanation of the personnel involved in the English System (solicitors, barristers, paralegals, judges etc.) Classes will be a mixture of lectures, discussions, and workshops. There will be some required pre-reading which will be emailed to students in April. There will be a short test at end the course (multiple choice questions to be done in class with full feedback given).
