Course objectives
This module will enable students to: • Critically review an overall strategic perspective of strategic management in PA institutions and relate this to a range of organisational and legal contexts, • Use appropriate techniques to evaluate the wider global, national and local environment within which a PA institution operates and use them for competent decision making. • Critically analyse the nature of a PA institution and the functional forces therein within the complex environment. • Undertake an internal audit of an PA organisation to determine its strengths and weaknesses. • Critically analyse roles and powers of different stakeholders and their influence on the PA organisation. • Identify and critically evaluate strategic options for growth and development of PA institutions. • Analyse institutional and functional strategies and their relationships • Select a strategic direction and plan its implementation. After completion of the module the students should be able to: a) Critically analyse the nature and origins of strategy, organisation’s mission, objectives, strategy and tactics and its role in achieving functional advantage and growth b) choose adequately and use appropriate techniques and theories to produce an structured analysis of external, internal and competitive environments, i.e. evaluate the influence of external stakeholders and conduct an internal audit analyse the functional units, value chain and resources to determine strengths and weaknesses, identify the key opportunities and threats for an PA institutions as well as to undertake an analysis of a PA sector and its functional environment c) use adequately generic strategy models to identify strategic options and its transformation to specific strategies and recommend and justify preferred strategies and plan for their implementation. d) critically evaluate the advantages and disadvantages associated with different organisational structures at international, national and local levels and identify strategic drift and factors associated with transformational change as well as understand culture and power and their influence within organisations strategic development

Teaching methods

Type and Weighting of Assessment Elements: 100 % written assignment Further information on assessment Active participation in module seminars includes the debate concerning individual topics, which is highly appreciated, the knowledge of case studies, written assignments. Illustrative assignment and assessment criteria: Make the strategic analysis of your institutions. Identify the appropriate external factors affecting your institution and review your institution’s strategic capability with particular reference to its core competencies, functional positioning and use of resources and management abilities. Identify relevant strategies for growth and achievement of the functional advantage. An answer to this question would be assessed against the following criteria: • use of appropriate analytical models applied at external, internal and functional environments. • critical evaluation and discussion of the main factors and their influence and likely impact on the PA institution identified with reasons. • deep insight and logical conclusions with practical, achievable recommendations for institutional and functional strategies. What conclusions emerge from your review and what recommendations do you make in response to these? Expected Form of Feedback: Formative and summative feedback will be provided to each student individually. Written comments with individual coursework assignments. Oral feedback upon request.
