Interest in law of succession. Active participation in classes, solving of a case (see methods of assessment). Elementary knowledge of relevant languages (esp. German) welcomed, but not necessary.

Course objectives
Aim of the course is to make students familiar with basic institutes of law of succession. The institutes are analyzed both from developmental and comparative point of view. As a result, by comparing different legal regulations, the students will be able to follow different tendencies and approaches to the law of succession. Subsequently, examples and cases will show advantages and disadvantages of respective legal regulations. As the students get familiar with Roman law roots of the institutes as well as with their development in 19th and 20th century, they will be able to easily work with new Czech Civil Code (enacted 2012).
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Identify and describe the consequences of specific principles of the law of succession
- Compare the insitutes of the law of succession from the historical point of view and with foreign legal orders
- Identify possible faults or ambiguities in last wills
- Suggest the appropriate formulation of last wills for different situations

Teaching methods
Lecture introducing into the topic and legal development of the institute followed by seminar discussion with work with cases and court decisions.
Assessment methods
Students will solve a case according to Roman law as well as Czechoslovak and Czech Civil Codes (Austrian ABGB, Czechoslovak Civil Codes 1950 and 1964, Czech Civil Code 2012). Following this, there will be a colloquium on their solutions.
