Course objectives
The aim of the course is to extend existing knowledge of PhD students at the Masaryk University in the field of intellectual property protection in the field of science and research. Students will obtain basic overview of the IP protection and teaching materials are supplemented with practical examples as well (protection of the results of teaching and research work , academic entrepreneurship, the establishing of spin-off companies, collaborative research, contractual research etc.) Linking legal protection with the common aspects of scientific research and development activities should provide graduates with basic knowledge of the current and complex issues and to enable them to take a proactive approach to the legal protection of research results. Course completion: colloquium. For the award of the colloquium is required for active participation in classes, as well as the successful completion of the final test.
Learning outcomes
After the successful completion of this course the student should have the understanding of basic principles of intellectual property rights in the field of scientific work and should be able to assess what steps should be taken so that the intellectual property which is created at the Masaryk University will be protected. The student should also learn basic knowledge about the technology transfer.
Syllabus
  • 1. Legal framework of scientific activities , research and development in the Czech Republic; Basic concepts and definitions, legislative conditions of application of the results of research and development (R & D), basic information about R & D (RIV), evaluation of R & D results 2. Scientific results and intellectual property protection; the concept of intellectual property and its basic overview 3. Results of the R & D and industrial property; protection of industrial property and its significance;IP portfolio management; role of students and university employees 4. R & D results and copyright protection; basic conditions of the copyright protection; employee´s works; student´s works; rights and responsibilities; Open Access 5. Transfer of R & D results; basic overview of the legislation; implementation of technology and knowledge transfer (transfer of rights, license agreements, establishing of the spin-off/spin-out companies) 6. External conditions of the protection of pedagogical and scientific works; human factor in the protection of intellectual property (motivation of stakeholders); enforcement of intellectual property rights; supporting tools: incubators for start-up companies

Teaching methods
The teaching method is based on the interactive lectures and the discussion as well. Theoretical explanation is accompanied by practical demonstrations of the key issues. Basic communication platform of students with the teacher is available Interactive Curriculum Information System of Masaryk University.
