Course objectives
At the end of this course students have detail knowledge of morphology of supportive tissues and ethiopatogenesis of periodontal diseases.
Learning outcomes
Student after the course: - knows the anatomy and histology of the healthy periodontium, - The student is familiar with the etiology and pathogenesis of periodontal disease.
Syllabus
  • - Introduction to periodontology, periodontology as a branch of dentistry. Basic anatomy of the oral cavity (division into individual parts, basic anatomical structures). Periodontal morphology and physiology (anatomical and histological structure of the gingiva, dental cementum, periodontium and alveolar bone + clinical implications). - Medical history in the dental hygiene practice. Basic clinical extraoral and intraoral examination of the patient and periodontal instrumentation used for this purpose. Basics of dental radiology with a focus on periodontology. - Parodontopathy - division and classification from 2018; Inflammation pathophysiology of inflammatory reaction; gingivitis - different stages of development (initial, early and established lesions), defence mechanisms of gingiva, clinical symptoms of gingivitis; Issues of oral biofilm, formation and development of dental plaque, plaque products; dental calculus; examination of gingiva in DH office - full mouth bleeding score, PBI; - Plaque-related gingivitis - assoc. with local and systemic factors; "Gingival enlargement" - possible aetiology and clinical picture; plaque-induced gingival disease - 2018 classification, individual subtypes and their clinical picture; therapy and prevention of gingival disease - instruction, motivation, plaque and calculus removal, auxiliary antiseptics (especially CHX); Parodontitis - etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, periodontal trunk formation, bone resorption. Classification of periodontitis - 2018; periodontitis and systemic health, periodontitis as part of systemic diseases. - Recording of gingival condition, detailed measurement of periodontal health - depth of periodontal pockets, level of dentogingival junction, recessions, tooth mobility, furcation, checking mucosal algae including frenulations. Documentation and treatment plan. Periodontal patient protocol. - Acute conditions in periodontology. NOP. Periimplantitis - Introduction to oral pathology. Overview of hard dental tissue pathology. Dental caries and its consequences - pulpitis and apical periodontitis. Jaw cysts. - Introduction to oral medicine. Examination of the oral mucosa. Basics of the microscopic structure of the oral mucosa. Medical history. Histopathological changes and morphology of mucosal manifestations. Auxiliary laboratory examinations. Congenital anomalies and developmental abnormalities of the oral mucosa. Common anatomical abnormalities of the oral mucosa and dorsum of the tongue. - Physical and chemical factors and their influence on the oral mucosa. Overview of viral, bacterial and mycotic infections of the oral cavity. The role of the dental hygienist in the prevention and treatment of these diseases. - Overview of immunopathological diseases of the oral cavity. Salivary gland pathology, salivary secretion and its disorders. The role of the dental hygienist in the prevention and therapy of these diseases.
